Description
為臺灣禱告 - wèi táiwān dǎogào - pray for Taiwan
Taiwan has a population of 23 million.
4.5% are Christian.
People become Christian not through big meetings or events, but mostly through personal contacts.
Most missionaries work among Mandarin-speakers, about 15% of the population and already well evangelised. The working class is mostly unreached; the church is very upper middle class and intellectual and that makes it hard for working class people to feel at home. The Hakka people group is also hardly reached. A third of Taiwan's Christians is from the mountain tribes, but many are nominal Christians and there's a danger of syncretism.
Taiwanese students are open to the Gospel, but there's a high dropout rate because many are never integrated into churches. Also, many Taiwanese emigrate, so 32% of church member loss is actually because of emigration.
In schools, the government allows pastors to teach religion / ethics. There's not enough volunteers for this though!
There's a growing interest in mission among Taiwanese Christians. There's also a hunger for God's word, interest in what the Bible teaches.
Missionaries are well-received and respected, even by non-Christians. Most church members are dedicated and eager, with stronger and deeper commitment than in the West. Taiwanese are also generally very generous, warm-hearted people, helpful and encouraging, and easily make friends.
PRAY FOR TAIWAN
For Taiwanese Christians to reach out to their non-Christian neighbours
For the missionaries working in Taiwan
For ways to reach the working class and make them feel more accepted in the church
For the aborigine churches
For more volunteers to teach religion at schools
For more Christian workers to go to the working class or to the Hakka
For wisdom for Taiwan's churches
